The funds will support the operations of The Family Place, an organization that harbors and supports victims of domestic violence. The Family Place has been trying to raise $2.8 million to complete its Legacy Campaign, which is expected to end in the next six months. James Dondero announced the issuance of this grant during The Family Place’s 21st Annual Texas Trailblazer Awards. Highland Capital Management, L.P., donated the funds through its corporate charity branch, Highland Dallas Foundation, Inc.

Since Highland joined in the campaign, The Family Place has raised an additional $200,000 towards the campaign. Highland Capital Management donation of $1 million serves as a challenge to ensure that this organization reaches its goal of $16.5 million by the end of the Legacy Campaign. According to James Dondero, this initiative serves as a call to action by Dallas Mayor and the Dallas Police Department to assist victims of family violence. The Dallas community has been instrumental in stabilizing The Family Place through a series of donations.

The Family Place’s facts

The Family Place is a shelter for victims of family violence, and the funds raised through the campaign will be used to finance the construction of a counseling center. The additional rooms to be constructed include a medical and dental clinic, a call center, 13 shelter bedrooms, counseling rooms, and spaces for job training. The new building will accommodate over 2000 victims annually.

The Family Place is also planning to launch agency’s Be Project, which will assist victims of teen dating violence and bullying. This initiative is estimated to reach out to over 6,000 students annually. The Family Place will also have an animal shelter for families with pets. Additionally, the facility will offer a child development center.

A look at James Dondero

James Dondero is a graduate of the University of Virginia where he majored in accounting and finance. Dondero began his career as an analyst with Morgan Guaranty Training Program. Over three decades, Dondero has worked with various companies and held various positions such as portfolio manager, corporate bond analyst, and chief investment officer.

In 1993, Dondero established the Dallas-based Highland Capital Management. Dondero is also a philanthropist who supports initiatives in public policy, education, and veteran affairs. He is part of the NexBank’s board of directors.
