Take on Ukraine’s Constitutional Challenges and Solution

Sujit Choudhry joined a team of experts in Ukraine to discuss the country’s semi-presidential government system. They discussed the challenges the system is facing, particularly constitutional challenges. Mr. Choudhry acknowledged that discussing executive powers before other experts was a great privilege and stated that Ukraine’s democratization was unstable. He further said that concentration of presidential powers, Ukraine’s electoral legislative system, and very weak political parties had led to its instability. Mr. Choudhry said it was critical for the leaders who are mandated to think about the country’s constitution, to not only discuss but to also collect policies based on options that support the reform process of the constitution. They should also focus on various case studies and use them in assembling information on constitutional reform.  To read about his published work, head over to indiawest.com.

On July the tenth Sujit Choudhry along with other scholars met in the city of Kiev to help the country of Ukraine build a constitution. The challenge for him was getting experts in their prospective fields together so that all of the groups of Ukraine can be represented in this high-level think tank. Sujit Choudhry believes that getting all of the groups together is the best way for a newly formed constitution to work. Working together is the best way to ensure the success for all involved. Building a constitution may take a long time but it can work in the right circumstances. This is why Sujit Choudhry and his group are there to help get the process off on the right foot.
